Canterbury Streets

Canterbury Streets. These are images taken over several years. They use the medium of monochrome to see the sights of the city with a different aesthetic. Some might say that the use of black and white is a step away from faithfully representing a scene. But alternatively monochrome could be more accurate by focussing the viewer on highlights and contrasts with less ‘noise’. Canterbury is a historical city and tourist destination. These photos draw attention more to empty streets, reflections in the rain and incidental scenes of meetings. In most tourist promotional photos there are sun bathed scenes of pleasure and desire. The aesthetic here is cooler and more everyday while also asking us to look again at the familiar.

Early morning. Reflections in the rain

Empty street in the rain. Contrast of black and white

River Stour. Reflections of buildings in rain. Youn can just see the punts used for tourist trips on the river.

Misty early morning. Looking to Westgate in St Dunstans. The old city gate as a spectral presence in the mist.

Magic hour before sunrise. St Dunstans, Canterbury. Noir effect

Rain and reflections with Christmas decorations. Canterbury street late Sunday afternoon.

Street preacher in central Canterury in rain.

Street in Canterbury centre. Reflections

Bridge over the Stour, Canterbury with autumn leaves. What is beyond the bridge?

Park by the River Stour. Autumn leaves with dark and shade. Tranquility and movement

Outside Nasons. The former department store has been closed for years. Cafe tables occupy the once busy space.
Tea break. Bikes in an out of town retail park.
Outside a community centre.
Through a window. Thoughtful and pensive reflection.
In the pandemic. We very quickly got used to a way of life that now seems in the far past. Except of course for those who lost loved ones in the pandemic.
